"Many hands make light work."
Raising a lot of money in a short time takes lots of help. We need skaters of all ages, their families and community members to all pitch in.
Here is a list of some of the tasks that need to be done:
- Organize and run a can-and-bottle return campaign
- Create and manage a database of potential donors that can be shared
- Host a fundraising dinner
- Host an informational meeting
- Buy a "brick" on the LA Wall
- Buy a paver on the entry walkway
- Gather names of potential donors
- Coordinate and run a sticker design contest, then sell winning sticker designs.
- Find skateboarding suppliers for the committee to contact.
- Schedule a presentation with your service club for us to come and make a presentation.
- Add a note to your church, service club, or other organization newsletter asking for support.
- Arrange for your church, service club or team to buy a large paver or name a feature.
- Contact Marquette Area Public Schools to get a flyer distributed through K-8 about the world record skateboard parade.
- Go to police station and get list of names of kids who have been ticked for riding their skate boards in the last 2 years might be good candidates for committee.
- Build 2-3 mini skate plazas for finger skateboards.
- Build a stake plaza on location out of snow
- In the spring, paint or stake out the different features on the grounds so you can walk the features.
- Write a letter to the editor in favor of the skate plaza.
- Go online and find Upper Peninsula and skateboard forums and ask for support for the skate plaza.
- Find companies that embroider hats – find the cool knit caps with the little brim and see how much they would charge to embroider 200, 300 or 400 hats for the skateboard parade world’s record.
- Contact Marquette Mountain and ask Jesie if we can stuff a Skate Plaza flyer in the registration packets for any Rail Jams they are holding.
- Write a feature story supporting the skate plaza for the Marquette Monthly, Mining Journal, UP Business Today, LSCP newsletter, UP Life and Times and any other publication you can think of. Tell the committee though, and give us a chance to fact-check it before publication.
- Kids and parents – be on call for TV, radio and newspaper interviews. The more we make this about the kids, the easier it will be to sell to the larger community.
- Make a 2 minute video explaining why you need a skate plaza and upload it to the MqtSkatePlaza Facebook page.
- Look for contests like the Readers Digest We Hear You or Pepsi Refresh contests and enter the Skate Plaza.
- Network with other communities with newer skate parks/plazas. Find out what they learned – mistakes we can avoid, best practices we can copy.
- Volunteer to be a photographer/videographer for fundraising events and meetings.
- Edit footage and photos to make videos for the Facebook page.
- Interview each other (video, in print with a photo) so we have lots and lots of kids' and parents' stories.
- Organize change jars at local businesses.
- Write thank-you notes on behalf of the committee.
- Would you sell something as a fundraiser? If so, what? Would you be willing to be the sales coordinator?
